When Mario Kart Tour launched in September 2019, the only way to play was in portrait mode — a choice that contributed to the mobile kart-racing game’s weird feel and some funky controls. But Nintendo has continued to update the mobile Mario Kart with new events, new karts, and new racers, including the recent addition of Captain Toad. Following its release, Mario Kart Tour became the most downloaded free game on iPhones in 2019. At launch, the game felt underwhelming in part due to missing some key features that make the Mario Kart series enjoyable. That included the lack of real-time multiplayer, which was added in March.
